About

The Mission of Topless America

Topless America is a collaboration of activists, artists and students stemming from many different backgrounds, geographical and cultural. We are dedicated to documenting the fight against America’s coal industry, and the preservation and protection of the land and people of the United States. Our mission aims to raise the public awareness of the origins of electricity and supports a higher perception of America’s relationship with energy.

Our Issues

Mountaintop Removal Mining

Although we are based in Chicago, The Topless America Project is dedicated to the preservation of the land and heritage of American mountains. We support all artistic mediums which educate people about the process of mountaintop removal coal mining and the irreversible damage it continues to cause our environment, land, and people. We strive to unite communities from the east to the west in the fight against mountaintop removal.

Clean Air and Water

Topless America fights for the rights of Americans to have clean air to breathe and water to drink , cook with, and bathe in. We recognize that every stream, river and sea are connected and if one waterway is poisoned, they all are poisoned. The Topless America team lobbies to fight for clean air and water for everyone. Currently we are lobbying the Clean Water Protection Act (H.R. 1310) and the Appalachian Restoration Act (S. 696), which would make it illegal for coal companies to poison the headwater streams of the United States with toxic mining waste.

Chicago Clean Power

As environmental justice activists, Topless America lobbies and fights for the safety of communities, whether in the mountains of Appalachia or the Midwest regions. We fight issues pertaining to contaminated air and water, “grandfathered” coal plants, and the effects on Illinois citizens. We have met with many Illinois representatives and will continue to do so until we all have a safe environment to live in. We will continue to lobby, petition, and participate in public actions within the city and the rest of the state to ensure the living conditions everyone has the right to enjoy. We are co-sponsors of the Chicago Clean Power Coalition, which is working to pass the Chicago Clean Power Ordinance in the City Council.
